How much information can a person pull if your a civilian and they have your IP address?

I posted on a message board and I am trying to figure out how much information a regular company can pull from my IP address. It has nothing to do with the cops. I know there are programs out there but how exact can they pull the IP address from? They can't get my address correct? Unless they are law enforcementHow much information can a person pull if your a civilian and they have your IP address? The IP address will give them the name of the company you get your internet from. That is all. It will give them an idea of the general area but unless they can subpoena your internet provider, they can't get much more than that. How much information can a person pull if your a civilian and they have your IP address?
Typically, it is never a good idea to give out your IP Address to anybody except those you can trust. Many programs can be found on the internet that can pull a lot of personal information from your IP, including your address, phone number, etc. Using this information they can easily get your name, relatives names, job info, and other personal things that you would rather keep private. And that's just what regular people can do with it! Companies are almost certainly able to pull much more from your IP than that. How much information can a person pull if your a civilian and they have your IP address? It is extremely simple to obtain a users IP address when posting to a website, communicating online, downloading programs and running them, or simply by using exploits that are within windows operating systems. With an IP address if a person is able to locate an open port on your computer, they can connect with user level access to your computer. Meaning they can control everything, the movement of your mouse pointer, the key presses, they can log your keystrokes over a period of time, and download the information at a later point.

A lot of virus scanners these days protect against this kind of stuff though with more intelligent firewalls and protective software. Ten years ago when I was into this kind of stuff we were able to simply scan IP addresses for open ports then access literally anything stored on that computer. Including personal accounting files, windows system files etc... You can even access connected usb ports for webcam or mic access, and taking it a step further download screen captures or screenshots of what the remote computer is displaying on the monitor.

As for a legitimate company, I doubt they would go into snooping around your home computer by connecting to your IP, its invasion of privacy and would be illegal to do so.

(Edit: In response to the number of answers that are misinformed please take the time to read about IP Sniffing and Remote connections, IP addresses are the phone number of your computer and connecting to it gives access to EVERYTHING you do on your computer. The best they can usually get is your ISP, and maybe what part of town your service is running. Without the ISP releasing the information, people cannot find out any more about an IP

If someone actually got your house address from an IP, that means someone else (at the ISP) broke some privacy law.... There are crooks everywhere, someone willing to make a buck on giving information out. Hopefully your ISP is reputable...(most are)How much information can a person pull if your a civilian and they have your IP address?well speaking as a former law enforcement officer. there are ways to narrow things down to potently narrowing things down to find out a persons exact address. its hard but it is doable. it basically boils down to how knowledgeable they are and how much time they want to put into researching this. most likely they wont but i cant say they cant. How much information can a person pull if your a civilian and they have your IP address?
Nobody can get any sensible private information's about you such as your physical address, name, phone number etc...

They can get only global information's such as city, ISP, organization etc...

To find out what someone can find out about you or any other person behind IP address check out IP tracking tools:

Hope this helps! How much information can a person pull if your a civilian and they have your IP address?
No, they would need to supoena your ISP. to find out which connection was assigned that IP at that time. The ISP has to have the logs saved, and they tend to do so.
The Internet Service Provider [ISP] used.

The city the ISP is in.
