What can I get more historical information on John and the book of revelations?

Like, I heard that there's a possibility that John may have been on some form of hallucinogenic drug at the time he wrote revelations? Where can I get more information on this research topic?What can I get more historical information on John and the book of revelations?well, provided you've checked the obvious places:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Rev鈥?/a>

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Pat鈥?/a>

which have references at the bottom of the pages.

there is NOWHERE ONLINE that i have found that states that Patmos even HAS mushrooms of ANY kind on the island. there are many people stating it as though it were fact, but no website that lists "mushrooms" as an occuring fungus on the island. even the Wiki page for Patmos doesn't mention it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patmos

there have been people claiming that Psilocybic muchrroms exist on Patmos, but the closest i've come to ascertaining that is that there is a beach named Psili Ammos, but that's no big shocker, since Psilocybin is from two common Greek words meaning "bare-headed", a reference to the appearance of the 'shrooms. these mushrooms are usually found in the Meso-American countries, and Mexico.

the Wiki page for Amanita Muscaria (another type of mushroom, mentions an author "interpreting" parts of the Bible as saying the Apostles partook of these mushrooms, but again, no reference to statistical data, though his book might be of use to your research:

this Wiki page MIGHT be where people are getting that idea from.

SOME of the posts here about the Book are interesting:

whether or not John actually ate mushrooms (which is really something NO ONE can prove nor disprove), and whether or not it was "accidental" (there are people all over the 'net saying this), it does NOT mean that what he experienced was not a vision of some sort. i have known personally, people who have taken certain drugs (mushrooms among them) and reached a level of clarity and understanding, and even harmony, that they might not have achieved without them. i'm not advocating drug use in general, just saying that certain ones, when used properly, can bring out a level of "insight" in people. many of the LEGAL drugs we take today would have seemed like "magic" a century ago. the more we learn about our environment (and ourselves), the better we have an understanding of what is possible...What can I get more historical information on John and the book of revelations?Good scholarly Biblical Commentaries are out there:

Look for those published by Yale University (not the Anchor Bible volume, however);

There are New Testament Commentaries published by Westminster/Fortress which are very helpful

Check out some Good One-Volume Commentaries (really a bit like Cliff's notes and not always as reliable): Abingdon; Interpreter's; Peakes; Jerome.

You can see if the Journal for Biblical and Theological Studies, Interpretation out of Richmond, Virginia has any back copies dedicated to the Book of Revelation which is also called the "Apocalypse".

There are good quality Bible Handbooks and even some 'Study Bibles' have good quality scholarly Introductions to the Books of the Bible but you have to be careful as to the version and theological slant of those who are involved with adding commentary in the introductions, prefaces and footnotes.

Hope this is helpful.What can I get more historical information on John and the book of revelations?bibledex.com
