What is a pin when referring to contact information?

I recently had a friend loss her cell phone and she went on to ask for everyone's numbers and pins. I've seen people ask for similar information before. Usually people respond with a long, bizarre serious of letters and number (e.g. 31ee3d). Never been able to figure out what it is....anyone know?
