How do a make graphs out of textual information in Excel or OpenOffice?

I want to make a graph out of information I have in a spreadsheet, a pie chart or a bar graph. I have a roster and I want to calculate the number of birthdays for each month and do other statistics. I basically want to tally the number of time each month, grade, and other text label appears. Is there a way to do this? How do a make graphs out of textual information in Excel or OpenOffice?I would suggest you use the COUNTIF function to convert the occurrence of text to a numerical value which can then be used in whatever style chart you want. The function works on your defined range and criteria "COUNTIF(range;criteria)" and returns the count. By repeating the function using the same range but changing the criteria you can create a separate range/table to use for your chart. Use the function wizard to walk you through the steps to create the function and define your ranges and criteria if you need help with the method. How do a make graphs out of textual information in Excel or OpenOffice?Your best bet would be to list everything out in a matrix. So in Column A list everyone's name, then in B list the month of their birthday, C they're grade, and so on. Make sure each column has a heading, so A1 = Names B1 = Birthdays C1 = Grades. Then once you have all the information entered create a pivot table. Once you have your information in the pivot table, create a chart, and it will update it automatically.
